Top Ten iPhone/iPad Apps for the Classroom and Beyond

boy with iPadEveryone loves a Top Ten list right?  With the growing popularity of using digital tablets as part of the educational curriculum, we thought we'd share some of the most popular iPhone/iPad apps for use inside and outside of the classroom.  You may have others to add to the list, so be sure to post them in the comments section.


  1. Star Walk - enables you to point your iPhone/iPad at the sky and see what stars, constellations, and satellites you are looking at in real time.
  2. Sky View - similar to Star Walk.  Point the camera to the sky, tap on what you see and discover neat things about sky objects.  It blends the camera view with 3D graphics.
  3. Team Umizoomi - for the younger kids, this app includes a counting game, number identification, comparison, addition/subtraction, and number line game all in a colorful child-friendly atmosphere.
  4. Color Mix (Fairy Princess) - is a kids educational coloring book app that is unique because it allows color mixing from five basic colors.
  5. Math Bingo - includes four different games featuring various math challenges along with three difficulty levels to choose from.
  6. Find the Words - is an electronic version of the old word search games. This app is free!
  7. iTunes U - another free app, this one gives you access to complete courses from leading universities and other schools.  It boasts the world's largest digital catalog of free educational content.
  8. Learn Spanish - is pretty self explanatory.  It was named one of the best education apps of the year (Rewind 2011).  It combines learning Spanish with a number of interesting and educational games.
  9. Toca Kitchen - is more of a toy than a game.  It lets you and your kids explore cooking together with various "what happens if..." scenarios.  The best part is, there's no mess to clean up.
  10. PBS KIDS Video - is a child-safe app that provides videos from favorite PBS KIDS television series. It features more than 1,000 videos available from over a dozen top PBS KIDS shows.  New videos are added every week.

All of these apps are available via Apple's iTunes store.
