There are many communities that have populated on the Internet to promote the spread of intelligent thought and ideas in higher education. These sites post articles, scholarly studies, and data relating to teaching methods, technology, and a vast variety of other subjects, and the role that they play in higher education. These sites also offer an arena like never before to allow individuals interested in the future of higher education to talk about current issues that have arisen and that could potentially change the future of colleges across America. NOVA is a member of two of these organizations: Educause and SCUP (Society for College and University Planning.
The first, Educause, is a database of articles and a hub for hot topics in education. Educators and organizations interested in educational trends, what is up-and-coming in the world of technology, and finding out what challenges institutions will face for the year to come, go here to listen to scholarly people discuss such topics. Educause is a trendsetter of sorts and they have made advances of their own; they are bridging the gap between the business of education and future technology that could be implemented in the realm of education.
Educators run Educause, which means that all they support is for educational purposes first, and for technology advancement second. They understand that there is a heritage of sorts that is lost in education if technology is the sole means of learning, and they work hard to keep the balance of purposeful learning and realistic technology in the classroom, while also staying abreast to technology trends. Educause is also known for its annual conference that populates a varied group of researchers, educators, business-people, and others interested in the realm of technology in education. At this conference, topics are brought up to challenge the limitations in education.
Society for College and University Planning
The second, SCUP (Society for College and University Planning, is a similar organization that specializes in integrated planning. SCUP’s website describes integrated planning as “the linking of vision, priorities, people, and the physical institution in a flexible system of evaluation, decision making and action. It shapes and guides the entire organization as it evolves over time and within its community.” SCUP works hard to solve issues that arise in the realm of higher education. With access to its various e-books and the community that has made the process of integrated planning its priority, the membership is a valuable one. They also offer various conferences and webcasts to help you stay up to date with the goings on of the organization.
