I’m a part of the growing population that has used an iPad in college. I’ve taken notes with it, drawn art assignments on it (with help from a few gadgets, listed below), and even recorded lectures. My iPad has set me up for success and I would like to share some of my tried and true tips to optimize your success with your iPad.
Using a keyboard sounds silly at first; your iPad has a perfectly functional built-in touch-screen keyboard. But when you’re trying to take notes as your professor is speaking, it’s hard to keep track of the ‘keys’ on the touch screen, so this case/keyboard makes a perfect tool to alleviate that problem. The case props the iPad up for either landscape or portrait viewing and is, seriously, the thing I could not have lived through iPad use in college.
A stylus is a must for handwriting and drawing apps. I was an art student, and through the use of the stylus, I was able to create detailed drawings as if I were using a wacom tablet on my computer. My professors were supremely impressed and so was I.
Evernote – Free
“Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve productivity. “ Keep track of events, notes, homework assignments; I’ve personally used this app is college to keep track of when my assignments were due; it’s a lifesaver!
Inkling – Free
“Inkling is a platform for interactive books, rebuilt from the ground up for iPad” Purchase the e-book versions of your required textbooks; this will save you money, time, and the pain of heavy books in your backpack. Plus, they offer the choice to purchase individual chapters versus buying the book in its entirety; yay savings!
InClass – Free
“Organize your schedule. Share your notes. Ace your classes.” Record audio, video, and type notes into this super handy app. Keep the calendar updated with your assignment due dates and sort by courses that you’re taking. Superb organization, all on your iPad!
DropBox – Free, with 2GB free storage automatically
“Dropbox is a free service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere.” And by anywhere, they mean it! Download the app to your home computer for ease-of-use as you travel from school to work to home. What you upload to your DropBox folder automatically syncs with your iPad and desktop apps, as well as the website. Use DropBox as a substitute for your Flash/USB/Jump Drive and you’ll never go back!
I would not go back to college without an iPad. My bag of tricks for success has been simplified to this tablet and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering using an iPad to aid them through college.
