Classroom Technology is Constantly Adapting

They use technology that changes, itself, on a regular basis. iPads are an integral part of this idea of changing technology. iPads change with each use, as the user downloads new apps, and updates the current ones installed on the device. Apps are easy to download and, at times, require an update; these updates are for the benefit of the user and rarely take longer than a few seconds to finish. New apps and fast updates always keep your students current. 

Because of the constant change, these tools can be used in a variety of ways and can be customized to fit the need of any student, teacher, or classroom. You need only to download the right apps, and take advantage of the many options available for this tablet to be the right one for your school. When a new subject arises in your classroom, download the latest information from the web or via an app to keep your students up to date. Early adoption is also key. Making use of these tablets early on allows using iPads more effective in the classroom.

Below are examples of how colleges are using iPads to enhance and meet the needs of the learning demands in their schools.

  • Colleges and universities could invest in iPads in order to help students, like what Memorial University (MU) of Newfoundland did. At MU, iPads were loaned out to students already pre-loaded with the pertinent textbook downloads and the most popular apps that college students need to be successful. Schools without iPads rely on paper: books, copies, notebooks, posters, notecards, etc. All of these uses of paper are expensive and add up quickly. If a school were to adopt iPads into their core curriculum, it would save the school money that would be used on textbooks, paper, pencils, copies, and the many other products typically used in a classroom.
  • Colleges and universities can use iPads in their freshman/first year experience. Many incoming college students are bringing a high expectation and use-level for technology with them as they enter college.  If colleges and universities could offer a first-year experience focused around the technology that students are already familiar with, then they may very well be able to engage a student on a different, more effective level than ever before.  Similar to the way that the University of Minnesota provided iPads for their incoming freshman in an effort to leverage the students’ affinity of technology.
  • By using various apps to enhance the educational outcomes of a college course, an institution can maximize their reach and offerings. Apps are becoming intuitive by nature and are starting to meet demands that we did not even know we needed fulfilled. This is true in the realm of educational apps, as well. Similar to Wolframalpha.com where a teacher or student can experience instant information or demonstration for any math related question, other apps can bridge any gaps in the student’s need for assistance or tutoring/additional education.

If only schools would realize the benefits of using, such tablets as, the iPad in their classrooms. These tools allow total customization of curriculum, cut costs, encourage engagement, and are exciting to use. Students and teachers, alike, are seeing the benefits of such devices and, yet, there is still hesitation to pursue this technology in schools. Maybe with the influence and guidance of other schools, and their success stories, more schools will be eager to adopt this great technology.
