Educational Transformation Through Technology

Posted by Nick Jones on Wed, Oct, 22, 2014 @ 08:10 AM

Olympic College in Bremerton, WA has recently installed a classroom designed to fully invoke the students' senses - seaming group learning, technology, and traditional teaching methods to maximize course effectiveness. Since it's introduction at MIT in the late 90's, the TEAL environment (Technology Enhanced Active Learning), has proven it's merits time and again.  Faced with low attendance and high failure rates in freshman physics, professors looked outside the box to engage students of varying levels of knowledge with the often abstract material. It began with interactive engagement, a new method which delivered promising results compared to traditional lecture-and-test style teaching.  Instructors found that when working in groups, more advanced students could bring struggling peers up to speed, while cementing their own understanding at the same time.  By shortening lectures and spending more time with hand-on activites, discussion, and experiments, students were more motivated than ever and test scores were up.

Classroom lecterns have come a long way

Posted by Jerry Doll on Tue, Jan, 17, 2012 @ 08:01 AM

Once upon a time, lecterns in the classroom consisted of a small pedestal large enough to hold a few sheets of paper or a text book.  They were simply utilitarian, made to serve one purpose — assist the speaker.  Lecterns as classroom furniture have come a long way.  They still serve to assist the speaker, but in a much broader sense.  In this blog, we'll take a look at some of the new innovations included in today's typical classroom lectern.

Making the most of classroom space; the 31/21 rule

Posted by Jerry Doll on Fri, Jan, 13, 2012 @ 09:01 AM

As we strive to provide technology furniture solutions for classroom and corporate environments, we have found the best way to do so is “listen to our customers.”  One of our clients — Towson University, Maryland — serves as a great resource for NOVA Solutions. They often provide us with new ideas and unique ways of approaching our business.  Recently, I spoke with Kris Phillips, Director of Planning at Towson about how he justifies building space for traditional classrooms versus computer labs.

My most recent stop on my ongoing video/photo tour was a return to Towson University located in Towson, Maryland.  This beautiful campus is home to more than 21,000 students.

We had visited them in April 2011 to grab some footage and photos of their NOVA classrooms in their School of Nursing and the College of Liberal Arts.  This time around, we returned to the College of Liberal Arts to take a peek at a couple of new classrooms that include the NOVALinked™ system.
